Module Overview

Aging Intro has GENERAL COURSE INFO as well as our NEURO 101 flash tour. Please read Chapter 1. Slide sets for Chapters 2, 3a, and 3b will also be posted on Canvas.
Chapter 6 [imaging] is dispersed throughout many slide sets because different kinds of imaging are used throughout this course and throughout the many diverse aspects of cognitive decline, neuropathology and dementia. Chapter 6 can be read now and should be referred to whenever imaging topics crop up.
  • Chapter 1 covers the foundations of neural systems
  • Chapter 2 focuses on cellular preludes to aging and neurodegeneration
  • Chapter 3 covers the effects of aging on neurons, glial cells, and proteins, as well as their contributions to neurodegeneration

Slidesets

Aging Brains Intro
Chapter 1 A general introduction to the parts and functions of neurons with an emphasis on components that break with age including axons, dendrites and neurotransmitter systems.
Senescence & Telomeres
Chapter 2 Summarizes the major themes of general cellular/organismal aging. This includes mitochondrial damage, mutations, telomeres, SASP, IDPs, lipofuscin, ROS, inflammation and diabetes.
Mitochondrial Dysfunction (Chapter 3a)
Intrinsically Disordered Proteins (Chapter 3b)
Chapter 3 Concerns general mechanisms by which neurons and glia accumulate damage over time. Introduces lipofuscin, demyelination, apoptosis and necrosis. Includes brain-cell interactions, inflammation, cytokines, glymphatic system, and metabolic dysfunction (aka Type 3 Diabetes).
